St. Croix River State Park

St. Croix River State Park is located along the Kettle and St. Croix rivers and is teeming with wildlife-  from mink, otters, and fox to eagles, owls, and hawks.  It offers beautiful landscapes and lots of trails for hiking and skiing.  On my trip we spent some time ski-ing!  Give it a try!

The history behind this park is very cool.  It was part of the fur trade well into the 1800's when it because a logging camp.  Logs were cut here and floated down river to lumber mills in the Twin Cities.  In the early 1900s the logging industry had pretty well run its course and since the land was mostly cleared of trees, it became attractive to farmers.  Unfortunately, the soil was not great for farming, so most of the farmers did not do well and were bought out in the early 1930s and became known as the St. Croix Recreational Demonstration Area.  The Civilian Conservatino Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA) worked this area building camps, roads, park facilities and more during the Great Depression.  Many of those structures remain in the park.  Lots of history here!  So spend a day exploring the past and then some time enjoying the nature!
