Interstate State Park

Interstate State Park is situated at the Dalles, or Rapids, of the St. Croix river.  The area was being heavily mined in the mid 1800s so before the mining begain in the St. Croix Dalles, leaders from both Minnesota and Wisconsin decided to turn the area into somewhat of a nature refuge.  Today the area remains protected on both sides of the river.

It is interesting to note that Minnesota's part of the park is in Taylor Falls, MN and Wisconsin has a reciprocal park across the river, in St. Croix Falls, WI.  Just about a half mile north of the Wisconsin park sits the National Park Service's St. Croix River Recreation Area, too.  This area is phenomenal!

One of my favorite aspects of this park is their potholes.  I know what you're thinking.  What fun can a pot hole be?  But these potholes are no ordinary potholes.  They are glacial potholes.  As the glaciers retreated millions of years ago, they left huge potholes, some 30 feet deep.  Think about that the next time you drive down a country road in the spring!  Very cool!
