Banning State Park

Banning State Park has a lot of regional history packed with fun outdoors activity!  When we arrived at the park they had just received a dose of heavy snow so it was perfect for for our family to spend some time outside.  I even joked about how we should go canoeing, but you can see by the photos that my jest remained at rest.  We spent an afternoon in the park doing some snow-shoeing but I learned some things about the park that I did not know!  For instance, in the late 1890s, Banning was home to the Banning Sandstone Quarry and had over 500 employees.  Sandstone was cut into huge blocks with a pinkish hue.  It was used for buildings.  Unfortunately, the company was nearly wiped out in 1894 due to a large fire (The Great Hinckley Forest Fire).  The company did get back on track by 1896, but by then, most contractors had moved on to steel for building contruction.  By 1905 the quarry was shut down for good.  The old quarry is still visible so a short hike is worth some great photos and a cool experience back in time!  Try it out!
